I would suggest avoiding recompiling PHP at all costs

can you go back to the developer and ask him/her to modify it, as it  
doesn't currently work

when you put in your rent-a-coder request, it is good to specify which  
host you are using.  also, for example, DH forbids the use of  
allow_url_fopen, but has really quite good documentation on how to use  
curl instead...
